Example of a Case Approach
When conducting a major investigation against a sophisticated individual or criminal organization, the case agent or lead investigator must utilize various investigative tools or techniques to ensure a proper and successful conclusion to the case. Many of those investigative tools include; Dealing with initial source and corroboration of information which opens a case investigation, Informant handling, criminal and public data base searches and information analysis, conducting various types of surveillance, writing search warrants and utilizing other means of legal entry, undercover operations, scene processing and collecting evidence, forms of documentation, interviews and interrogations, asset forfeiture, case management, implementing security measures for officer safety, witness protection and case integrity, report writing with court preparation, identifying criminal associates, flow charts, link analysis, and an understanding of the criminal individual or criminal groups method of operation, structure, behavior, philosophy, and culture to better ensure a safe and successful case conclusion. Tim has conducted many investigations involving violent crimes, drugs and narcotics, clandestine labs, vehicle theft, and has investigated more than 300 chop shop cases, written more than 100 search warrants and has handled the many aspects of working sophisticated criminal cases. He has participated as lead investigator and case assistant investigator with, an unusual, six long-term career cases involving high profile sophisticated Organized Criminal groups. Tim has studied the history and culture of these organized criminal groups and has attended many law enforcement training classes dealing with the various organized criminal operations. He has testified many times as a court qualified expert in the field of drugs & narcotics, vehicle theft & chop shop operations, and vehicle identification in the Los Angeles and Riverside Superior Courts. Tim has taught many classes to Local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies on topics such as: Chop Shop Investigations and Criminal Sophistication, Methods of Operation, Surveillance Techniques, Undercover Operations, and Vehicle Identification. Tim is the first to clearly define the four levels of vehicle theft sophistication and has made the clear distinction which separate the levels; by methods, motives and structured operations carried out by criminal individuals and organized criminal groups.
